If your doctor has prescribed NEXIUM for relief of your acid reflux symptoms, or to heal damage from acid reflux disease called erosive esophagitis (EE), it is important to stay on your treatment plan for as long as he or she recommends. If you sometimes forget to take your NEXIUM or to refill your prescription, the tools on this page can help.

Your stomach is always producing new acid pumps— and more acid. If you stop taking NEXIUM, this acid could start building up again and your heartburn pain could return. And for people with EE, the damage caused by acid reflux disease could return too.

Studies with NEXIUM show that patients with EE who stopped their treatment after 8 weeks had a 70% chance this damage would return within 6 months. Meanwhile, the majority of patients with EE who continued taking NEXIUM remained healed even at 6 months.* Your results with NEXIUM may vary.

NEXIUM is prescribed to treat the symptoms of acid reflux disease, which typically include persistent heartburn on 2 or more days per week, despite treatment and change of diet.

For many people, NEXIUM is also prescribed to heal damage to the esophagus called erosive esophagitis. This damage may be caused over time from stomach acid wearing away the lining of the esophagus. Only a doctor can diagnose this condition. With NEXIUM, most erosions heal in 4 to 8 weeks. Your results with NEXIUM may vary.

In children 1 to 17 years of age, side effects with NEXIUM include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and sleepiness. In adults 18 and older, side effects with NEXIUM include headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Symptom relief does not rule out the presence of other serious stomach conditions.
