A Little Travel Planning Goes a Long Way
Take the heartburn relief with you. Traveling can create opportunities and
expand worlds. But it can also create a challenge or two for someone with
acid reflux disease. Symptoms may be brought on by stress, unfamiliar foods,
and disrupted routines—all common when you travel. Here are a few ways
to help manage your symptoms.
Travel Tips
Reduce stress
- Avoid peak travel times like Friday through Monday or morning and
evening rush hours
- Don't rush. Allow time for traffic, check-in, and security
- Check travel and map Web sites for the best way to get from your arrival
location to your final destination
Continue healthy eating habits
- Bring along healthy snacks such as carrot sticks and pretzels. Bypass the
fast food
- Savor the local culture, but beware of highly spiced or unfamiliar cuisines
Keep up with your medication
- If you're running low, ask your pharmacist to give you an early "vacation
refill." Insurance companies often allow this so be sure to check with your
provider first
- If you're traveling internationally, keep your prescriptions in their
original containers. It could make clearing customs faster and easier
- Pack your medications in carry-on bags; checked bags can get lost
- Travel with a list of your doctors, medications, and emergency contacts
