IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION—NEXIUM Capsules and Delayed-Release Oral Suspension
- Symptom relief does not rule out the presence of other serious conditions. Talk with your doctor
- Talk to your doctor about serious side effects, including:
- Kidney problems (acute tubulointerstitial nephritis) may happen at any time during treatment with NEXIUM. Call your doctor if you have a decrease in the amount that you urinate or if you have blood in your urine
- NEXIUM may increase your risk of getting severe diarrhea. Call your doctor right away if you have watery stool, stomach pain or fever that does not go away
- NEXIUM may increase the risk of bone fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine if you take multiple daily doses for a year or longer
- NEXIUM can cause rare but severe skin reactions which may need to be treated in the hospital and may be life-threatening. Stop taking NEXIUM and call your doctor right away if you have a skin rash which may have blistering, peeling or bleeding on any part of your skin, including your lips, eyes, mouth, nose, genitals, hands or feet and may be accompanied by fever, chills, body aches, shortness of breath, or enlarged lymph nodes
- Some people who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including NEXIUM, develop certain types of lupus erythematosus or have worsening of the lupus they already have. Call your doctor right away if you have joint pain or rash on your cheeks or arms that gets worse in the sun
- Low vitamin B12 if you have been on NEXIUM for a long time (more than 3 years)
- Low magnesium levels if you take NEXIUM (for 3 months or more)
- Stomach growths (fundic gland polyps), especially if you take PPIs for more than 1 year
- Tell your doctor if you have low magnesium, calcium, and potassium levels in your blood, have liver problems, or if you are or planning to be pregnant or breastfeed
- Tell your doctor about all of the medicines you take, prescription and nonprescription drugs, including clopidogrel, vitamins and herbal supplements. NEXIUM may affect how other medicines work and other medicines may affect how NEXIUM works. Especially tell your doctor if you take: clopidogrel (Plavix), methotrexate (Otrexup, Rasuvo, Trexall, XATMEP), digoxin (LANOXIN), rilpivirine (EDURANT), St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), or rifampin (Rimactane, Rifater, Rifamate)
- Do not take NEXIUM if you are taking a medicine that contains rilpivirine (EDURANT, COMPLERA, ODEFSEY) used to treat HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
- Do not take NEXIUM if you are allergic to esomeprazole magnesium or any of the ingredients in NEXIUM, or are allergic to any other PPI
- The most common side effects with NEXIUM may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, gas, stomach (abdominal) pain, constipation, dry mouth and drowsiness
Approved Uses for NEXIUM
- NEXIUM is a prescription PPI used in adults for healing and symptom relief of acid-related damage to the esophagus called erosive esophagitis (EE); to treat heartburn and other symptoms that happen with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in some people taking pain medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); along with antibiotics to treat patients with a stomach infection and a stomach ulcer; and for the long-term treatment of conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
- NEXIUM is used in children 1 to 11 years of age and in adolescents 12 to 17 years of age to heal EE and to treat heartburn and other symptoms that happen with GERD. NEXIUM is used in children 1 month to less than 1 year of age to treat GERD with EE.
